Sidewalk Chalk Art the Kids Can PLAY In – A Giant Chalk Art Town

by: Krissy, B-Inspired Mama

It’s so fun to create big art outside – in the sunshine and soft breeze – alongside the kids.

Last week J.C. and I headed to the park with our snack bag, some Tum-E Yummies flavored water beverages (B-Inspired Mama sponsor) to keep the kids hydrated while playing outside, and lots of colorful sidewalk chalk for some BIG and fun sidewalk chalk car play. Check it out…

How I Made Our Sidewalk Chalk Art Town & Roadway:

I used black sidewalk chalk to sketch out my outlines. I started by making a big oval around myself. Not a perfect oval (no perfection allowed here!); a wavy wonky oval makes for a much more fun toy car road, right?

Then I worked around the oval, adding different parts of a town:

  • an oval shaped pond surrounded by simple pine trees and a triangular camping tent
  • a silo, barn, and fence for a farm
  • a simple house with oval shaped shrubs and a little dog house
  • squares and rectangles for city buildings like a police station and hospital
  • a tall church with a steeple and cross

Once I had my town sketched out, I worked my way around adding color.

It was as simple as coloring in a coloring book. But as fun as making a masterpiece!

Once I had all of the town colored, I added another wavy oval line around the inside to make the road. I used gray with yellow dotted lines to make a paved road near the town but used browns to make a dirt road near the farm.

My Sidewalk Chalk Art Tips:

  • Stick to big simple shapes and lines – it’s hard to get small details with chunky sidewalk chalk.
  • Use 2-3 colors for each building/scene – experiment with layering them.
  • Add highlights and accent lines with white or a lighter contrasting color.
  • Add shadows and depth with a darker complementary color.
  • Get your fingers into it to blend and spread colors.
  • Use a light touch when blending white and other light colors – they get “muddy” fast.

J.C. had a blast driving his toy cars through his Sidewalk Chalk Art Town. By the way, a toy police car is a must for this town with a police station! There were some pretty intense police chases around that oval road.

I only have one issue with taking my kids to the park or playground…

They’re so excited and busy – playing and exploring – they don’t slow down enough to drink and stay hydrated.

So Tum-E Yummies, a kid-friendly, fruit flavored water was perfect to have in our snack bag.

The fun bright colors, yummy fruit flavors, and cool (no-spill!) sports caps entice my kids to stop and have a drink – keeping them hydrated for lots more play!

With flavors like Very Berry Blue, Greentastic Apple, Fruitabulous Punch, Orange-arific, and Sour-sational Raspberry, kids will “SEE FUN.”

And with 100% daily value vitamin C, B6, B12 and only 50 calories and 13g of sugar, mamas will see “GOODNESS.”
